Mike Pfanenstiel’s Kislev

These pictures were taken before the army basing was complete; some photographs with grass and snow on the bases will be forthcoming. The army is a Kislev/Dogs of War composite army, inspired by the journal of one of Mike’s own ancestors whose journal describes his experiences living among tundra nomads in ancient Russia.
Winged Lancers
These four units comprise the bulk of Mike’s army. I borrowed the bear paw motif from Beorg Bearstruck’s unit (below) to unify the army. As with my Empire models, I painted the Lancer banners at twice size, scanned them, and printed them out on photo paper before attaching them to the models.
Gryphon Legion
These are the elite cavalry of the Kislev army; Mike put his on bears.
Ungol Horse Archers
Kossars
What, was “Cossack” copyrighted?
But seriously, I think that this is one of the most attractive units put out by GW. Mike added some Mordheim figures to spice up the command group.
Duellists
These two Dogs of War duellist units are comprised of Kislevite miniatures from GW’s late 1990’s game Mordheim.
Vespero’s Vendetta
Mike scrounged up quite a collection of obscure but well-matched nordic figures to represent this Regiment of Renown.
Beorg Bearstruck and the Bearmen of Urslo
Following the tundra theme, I decided to paint Mike’s bearmen in white furs instead of brown. I was very happy with Beorg’s appearance as a polar-bear-looking werebear.
Asarnil the Dragonlord
Mike came up with this conversion which combined parts from the actual Asarnil figure with pieces from the Kislev line in order to create a more Slavic-looking alternative to the Elric-inspired mercenary Elf Asarnil.
The Ice Queen
Boris
Mike put this Kislevite special character on a smaller base in order to represent the Boyar commander of his allied contingent.
The Paymaster
After putting Count Raukov on a bear and giving him a money-chest, he looked like an excellent Kislevite paymaster.
